ASEM was established in 1996 with an aim to strengthen political dialogues, economic cooperation and cultural exchange between Asia and Europe. Currently, ASEM has 45 members, including 10 ASEAN nations, China, Japan, South Korea, India, Pakistan, Mongolia and 27 EU nations plus European Commission and ASEAN Secretariat. Respectively, the population and GDP of ASEM members account for 50% or more of the total in the world.
The ASEM Trade & Investment Fair on SMES was proposed by Chinese PM Wen Jiabao and endorsed by all ASEM members at the 6th ASIA-EUROPE Meeting held in Helsinki September 2006. Highlighting the theme, “Promoting SMEs’ Trade and Investment in Asia and Europe”, the event will offer various activities such as exhibitions, investment policy briefings and fora. It is set to provide a platform for dialogue and cooperation among ASEM member countries and business people and government officials. It will also collect suggestions on SMEs development and submit the suggestions to ASEM SMEs Ministerial Meeting to be held in Beijing.
