Introduction to Xiamen University

Xiamen University was founded in 1921 by Mr. Tan Ka Kee. It was the first Chinese university founded by an oversees Chinese. Within the 5 SEZ's it's the only key comprehensive university directly affiliatied with the Ministry of Education. It's also one of China's higher-level universities designated for the state key construction of both the "211 project"  and the "985 project". The university has 20 schools, containing 43 departments. It offers 71 undergraduate programs, 150 gradate programs including 4 profesional masters progrand, and 87 PhD programs.

There are approximately 25000 full time on campus students, 847 of which are overseas students, and another 426 students come from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.     

Xiamen University has established over 70 research institutions, including 1 State Key Laboratory, 1 State Specialty Laboratory, 3 Education Ministry Key Laboratories,1 Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory, 2 Fujian Provincial Research Center, and 4 state key research bases in humanities and social sciences.

Xiamen University has established inter-university cooperative ties with 69 institutions of higher education outside mainland China. It also has two sister-universities in Holland; the Universiteit van Amsterdam, amd Leiden University. Currently there are only a few Dutch students enrolled.

The university is spread over three campuses; the Xiamen campus, the Zhangzhou campus and the Jimei campus.
