The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is the only university affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). It was founded in Beijing in 1958 and the first President was Dr. Guo Muoruo, who was concurrently President of CAS. In the early 1970s it moved to Hefei, the capital city of Anhui Province, and has now grown into a comprehensive key national university of sciences, engineering, management science, and liberal arts. During China's 7th and 8th Five-year Plan periods, it was one of the universities that enjoyed special financial support from the government. Presently, it has been selected as one of the first group of universities to receive priority investment for upgrading institutional building under the state's Project 211.
USTC now has 7 schools and colleges, which include 24 departments, the Special Class for the Gifted Young, 2 common core education sections, 36 undergraduate programs, 57 master's degree programs, and 39 doctoral degree programs, and 8 mobile postdoctoral centers covering 28 disciplines. Among the above mentioned academic programs, there are 3 national bases in mathematics, physics, and mechanics for fundamental research of science and cultivation of teaching talents, 4 national key disciplines, and 10 CAS key disciplines. It is also the key base for the education of doctoral students of CAS. USTC also has 4 national key research institutions, 6 CAS key research institutions, and a first-class campus computer network and maintains an excellent position among the universities of China.
The headquarters of USTC has a staff of about 3360 personnel, of which there are more than 1650 teachers. There are 10 academicians from CAS and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and 369 professors, of which there are 280 Ph. D advisors, and 825 associate professors. Progressive young teachers occupy more than 80% of the total and they infuse youth and vigor to USTC.
There are altogether over 8, 000 students in USTC, among which there are 550 doctoral students, 1, 300 master students, and more than 6, 000 undergraduate students. The admission scores and comprehensive quality of undergraduates have remained among the best of the universities of China.
USTC is also actively engaged in extensive international exchanges. Every year more than 200 foreign experts come to teach or do research here. Some world-famous scientists such as C.N. Yang, T.D. Lee, S.C.C. Ting, and Y.Z. Lee were engaged as honorary doctors, honorary and guest professorships. Every year over 300 scholars are sent abroad to visit, study, or do cooperative research. USTC has signed agreements of cooperation and exchange with over 40 universities from 20 countries and districts.
